The Floripa Calendar Project

What do you get when you cross a world-class photographer with some of Florianopolis’ most beautiful scenery and female models? Nexus alumni Jeremiah Thompson was determined to find out, and so far the results have been nothing short of spectacular! Having visited Floripa for the first time with Nexus several months ago, it didn’t take long for Jeremiah to fall in love with the island’s relaxed vibe.

With previous experience working on numerous nature and wildlife photography and video projects, Jeremiah was intrigued when he first saw a copy of the 2008 Nexus Diva Calendar and decided that he wanted to give model photography a shot himself, booking a return visit and starting to lineup photo shoots with local models.

Combining a strong artistic eye with creative staging and unique lighting techniques, it wasn’t long before Jeremiah developed a reputation as a top photographer in Floripa. Look out for the Floripa Calendar in stores near you in 2009, but for now Jeremiah needs your help in determining the top photos that will make the final cut for the calendar – please visit his official website of the Floripa Calendar Project and cast your vote today!!

S.O.S. GRAVATÁ!!!

In an effort to help preserve one of Florianopolis’ most postcard perfect sights, a true natural gem located on the right side of Praia Mole beach and known as Ponta do Gravatá (or unofficially, the “dragon’s head” for its similarity to a slumbering dragon), Nexus and it’s #1 sponsored pro surfer, Floripa local Davi Jesus, are joining forces to put on a Celebrity Surf Tournament on the 27th of July in Praia Mole to help draw support for the cause.

Threatened by a speculative real estate development project which is blatantly contrary to local zoning and building regulations (but backed by several local politicians, who coincidentally also happen to be connected with the owners of the land on which the development would be built!), Gravatá is an area important to both the Floripa community of today as well as future generations for whom the region should be preserved. For those interested in helping out the preservation cause, please contact Nexus regarding donations. More information available at: http://www.sosgravata.org

NEXUS (and Florianópolis) IN THE NEWS

San Diego Union Tribune::

To Westerners, Florianopolis is relatively unknown, an undiscovered island paradise ideal for families, honeymooners, coastal adventurers, surfers, sun-worshipping beachgoers or party lovers. The Brazilian press has consistently voted Floripa as having the best quality of life in Brazil over the past decade.

Athletic opportunities abound and include surfing, wind surfing, kite surfing, river rafting, wake boarding, snorkeling, paragliding, nature hikes, horseback riding, yoga, Brazilian jiu jitsu, and a full-service health club.

In a country like Brazil with significant language barriers, transportation, activity and restaurant reservations, waiting in lines or paying cover charges at nightclubs, etc, can really bog down the experience. Nexus Surf tries to show visitors the island from an insider's point of view, minus the hassle. Through the company's network of guides and instructors, visitors have the opportunity to understand what it means to live like a Brazilian.

Santa Catarina is blessed with a variety of natural splendors; glorious white sand beaches, beautiful lagoons, lush rainforests and snow tipped mountains, all within a two hour drive of one another. Added to the stunning scenery is the diversity of the inhabitants; from Azorean fishermen, to Italian farmers, and German industrialists, this is a land of beautiful, sharp and fascinating contrasts.

Florianopolis is the capital of Santa Catarina and located mainly on Santa Catarina Island. Fondly known as Floripa or Surfer’s Paradise, Florianopolis is famous for many of its water-sport activities, numerous beaches, colonial architecture and lively nightlife.

With its amazing scenery, it’s no wonder that Santa Catarina is ideal for those lovers of Mother Nature. The geographic diversity of the state, allied to the rich and preserved vegetation, offers fascinating options for eco-tourism. Between the months of July and November, the Right whales visit the state’s coast, increasing the amount of tourists to the area, who flock to see these amazing mammals.

The balance and dynamism of the Santa Catarina economy are reflected in high levels of growth, literacy, employment and per capita income that far exceed the national average. These numbers complement the fascinating profile of one of the most productive and beautiful Brazilian states.
